The Sailor Who Fell from Grace with the Sea

March 15 – April 27, 2019

CAPITAL is pleased to announce The Sailor Who Fell from Grace with the Sea, Justin Morin’s second exhibition with the gallery.

In his new works, Morin explores the surprise and pull of beauty, both synthetic and natural, as well as the creativity inherent in the art of translation. For this exhibition, Morin will present seven new silk draperies. The color arrangement and composition are inspired in both palette and flow by the world of the pearl: mollusk, shell, and ocean.

The artist is also presenting a new series of small resin sculptures titled, Locked Galaxy. These works are made with natural baroque pearls and tri-wing screws, a specific screw used in aeronautic and communication industries, especially in smartphone construction. This exhibition explores aspects of the pearl, from the iridescence of its surface, to the many cultural references within literature and pop culture.

For Morin, pearls are inspiring. This symbol of elegance is the result of a mollusk’s defense mechanism, born in a surprising organic environment, within the heart of an unsightly shell. The mollusks outward appearance would not immediately signal something good, much less something beautiful, was inside. The Sailor Who Fell from Grace with the Sea explores this spectrum between invisible and abject to the precious and rare.
